The abbey at its heart was founded in 1107 by William d'Aubigny, Butler to King Henry I, a Norman nobleman whose family came from Saint-Martin d'Aubigny in Normandy. He established it as a small dependency of the Benedictine monastery at St Albans, where his uncle Richard was abbot, and intended it for perhaps twelve monks. What he got instead was nine centuries of continuous life: dispute, elevation, dissolution, survival, and a 1793 organ that still fills the nave with music.]]></description>
