The shade of that platanus, the story goes, is where modern Greece was decided. Whether or not the legend holds in every particular, the tree is still there. The village that surrounds it, at 1,050 meters in the mountains of Arcadia, 12 kilometers west of Tripoli, has earned its legends through several kinds of hard experience.]]></description>
