The poet Hesiod, who lived in Boeotia in the eighth century BC, opened his *Theogony* — one of the oldest surviving works of Greek literature — with the Muses dancing on Mount Helicon. They washed their bodies in the spring of Hippocrene, he wrote, and then gathered in the night to sing of the gods. Whether Hesiod was describing an actual place or a vision is a question ancient readers did not feel the need to ask: Mount Helicon was the home of the Muses, the goddesses who gave poets and musicians their gifts, and on its eastern slopes the Boeotians built a sanctuary in their honor. That sanctuary, the Valley of the Muses, became one of the notable religious and cultural sites of the ancient Greek world.
