The bora comes screaming down off the Markotkh ridge in autumn and winter, reaching speeds that can exceed 220 kilometers an hour, driving ships from their moorings and turning a calm anchorage into a trap. And yet, for all its fury, this bay was worth it. Tsemes Bay - also called Novorossiysk Bay - is a deep, ice-free notch on the northeastern shore of the Black Sea, and for the ancient mariners who first probed this coast, it was simply the only good harbor to be had for a very long way. The wind was the price. The shelter was the prize.
