Below the city, at a place called Onceium, there stood a temple unlike any other in Arcadia. The Thelpusians called their Demeter by a name that made visitors uneasy: Erinys — Fury. This was the goddess not of grain and harvest but of grief and rage, the deity who had wandered horse-headed through the world after Poseidon's assault, driven to madness before she could be coaxed back to herself. Other Greek cities worshipped Demeter Eleusinia, giver of life and law. Thelpusa alone held the darker version, the one who knew what loss felt like from the inside. That temple, on the left bank of the Ladon near a place called Onceium, where the son of Apollo was said to have once reigned, made this small city on the hill something mythologically singular.
