Taman Peninsula: Introduction

Photo credit Public domain. Two thousand years ago, this was not a peninsula at all but a scatter of islands adrift between three seas. The Taman Peninsula is young and restless land, still forming, still shifting, its shallow lagoons and reed-choked estuaries slowly knitting together into the low finger of Krasnodar Krai that now points west toward Crimea. The Sea of Azov laps its northern shore, the Kerch Strait guards its western tip, and the Black Sea rolls against the south. Beneath the surface, mud volcanoes burp and bubble, pushing up small cones from deposits of natural gas and petroleum, so that the very ground seems alive, breathing, unfinished.
