Henri and Willem Peteri left Katwijk in occupied Holland in a collapsible canoe in September 1941 and paddled fifty-six hours across the North Sea. On the beach today there is a memorial of crossed kayak oars and a broken paddle, unveiled in 2009 by Henri's widow, alongside the original kayak. The dome of the Sizewell B reactor is the next thing you see when you look north.
