But in the Sé parish, the handover produced something stranger than simple transition: two systems coexisting in the same streets, the same buildings, sometimes the same block. The consulates of Portugal and Angola still operate here alongside the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government. The Banco Nacional Ultramarino's old headquarters faces new casino towers that dwarf it. Sé is where Macau's compressed, layered history is most legible — a place where five centuries of competing jurisdictions have left their marks without fully erasing each other.
