Photo credit Huygens, CC BY-SA 2.0. The animals at Riversleigh did not lie down to die in mud and slowly flatten over the eons, the way fossils usually form. They fell into lime-rich freshwater pools and limestone caves, and the dissolved calcium carbonate set around their bones like nature's own plaster. The result is uncanny: skulls and skeletons preserved in three dimensions, uncrushed, as if the deep past had been cast rather than buried. On a sun-blasted limestone plateau in the far north-west of Queensland, this is where Australia's lost menagerie comes back to life.
