Fishermen working the channel between Kythnos and Serifos encountered something unexpected in the sea — the icon of the Virgin Mary, the one now enshrined above the bay of Kanala. They brought it to their village, Dryopida. Then, according to the tradition that has carried this story across generations, the Virgin appeared to the fishermen in their sleep and told them where she wanted her church built: not in Dryopida, but above the bay on the island's southern coast. The church was built where she indicated. The icon has remained there since.]]></description>
