The island's name carries a memory of partnership. Mulgumpin, the Quandamooka name for Moreton Island, recalls a time when people and dolphins fished these waters together, the dolphins herding fish toward the shallows and the Ngugi sharing in the catch. That relationship has not entirely vanished. Most evenings at Tangalooma, wild bottlenose dolphins still glide in from the bay to be fed by hand at the water's edge. It is a fitting introduction to a place that is almost entirely sand yet teems with life, and that hides shipwrecks, a wartime fortress, and a dune so high you can see for sixty kilometres from its crest.
