During the Greek Civil War it held nearly 10,000 men — Greek soldiers, Greek civilians, Greeks who had fought in the wartime resistance — imprisoned there not for crimes they had committed but for political beliefs their own government had decided made them unreliable. On the morning of 29 February 1948, guards opened fire on a group of these men during what should have been an ordinary march to morning roll call. Five soldiers died. More were seriously injured. The following day, 1 March, worse violence followed. The events of those two days are known as the massacre of the First Sapper Battalion.]]></description>
