Christmas had come and gone two days earlier, the school holidays were in full swing, and an estimated 800 people were strung along the sand in the summer heat. Overhead, a single-engine military aircraft traced lazy circles between Maroochydore and Alexandra Headland, watching the water for sharks. At about ten past eleven, the plane banked steeply, dropped, and came down onto the crowd. Three children were killed and fourteen people were seriously hurt. The Sunshine Coast remembers it still.]]></description>
