Near the village of Buda, in the depths of the Kholodnyi Yar forest, a single oak has been growing for more than 1,100 years - putting on rings while empires rose and fell around it, and reaching a girth no arms could hope to close around. Its trunk measures nine meters in circumference. It climbs some thirty meters into the canopy. And it carries the name of Maksym Zalizniak, a Cossack who, tradition holds, mustered his fighters in this forest before one of the great uprisings of the eighteenth century.
