Low Isles Light: Introduction

In the second half of 1877, in a Brisbane workshop, carpenters bolted together the frame of a lighthouse, clad it in galvanised iron, and then took it apart again for the long sea voyage north. By December the disassembled tower was bound for a sand-and-coral speck thirteen kilometres off Port Douglas. On 17 September 1878 its lamp was lit for the first time, and the Inner Passage of the Great Barrier Reef - until then a black corridor that ships ran at their peril - had its first guiding light. Low Isles Light has been warning mariners off the coral ever since.
