It sits just north of the resort strip, low and flat in a landscape that favors limestone peaks and dramatic coastal views, and it doesn't announce itself with signage or spectacle. But in October, something changes. The skies above the lake begin filling with birds that have flown hundreds or thousands of kilometers — gray-faced buzzards, purple herons, common teals, and dozens of other species dropping down from the flyway to rest and feed in the reeds and shallow margins of one of the largest lakes in southern Pingtung County.
