Lizard Island: Introduction

North Direction and South Direction Islands form the tail; the whole formation, laid across the blue of the northern Great Barrier Reef, is a creature from a creation story older than any map. They call this place Jiigurru. The English called it Lizard Island, because James Cook, scrambling up its peak in 1770, noticed the monitor lizards basking in the grass. Two names, two ways of seeing, fixed to one high granite island, set the tone for everything that has happened here since.
