Somewhere beneath the streets of Kursk, a compass needle would rather not point north. The city sits atop the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly, the largest known iron-ore reserve on Earth, a buried mass so rich in metal that it tugs at the planet's magnetic field and drew scientists here to puzzle over it long before anyone could mine it. It is a fitting secret for a place this old.
