Kryvyi Rih does not gather itself into a tidy center the way most cities do; instead it stretches, a ribbon of streets and mines and mills that runs for 126 kilometers from its northern end to its southern one, following the ore in the ground beneath it. Home to some 660,000 people in central Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, it is a place built entirely around what lies underneath - iron, and the work of pulling it up - and to travel its length is to cross what feels less like a city than a country of its own.
