Photo credit Mixabest, Public domain. In the year 972, the Kievan Rus' prince Sviatoslav I tried to run the Dnieper Rapids and did not make it. The Pechenegs were waiting, as they often waited for travelers forced to slow at the churning water, and they killed him there. The rapids that took a prince are gone now, drowned beneath a reservoir in the 1930s, but the island that watched over them remains. Khortytsia is the largest island in the Dnieper, a long spine of rock and oak and steppe in the river's midst, and it has been continuously inhabited for roughly five thousand years. Few places in Ukraine hold so much history in so little land.
