Somewhere in a British Museum storage room, a bronze tablet sits quietly — and on it is a treaty, written in the old Peloponnesian dialect, that two city-states signed around 580 BCE for a hundred years of mutual protection. One of the signatories was Elis, the region that controlled Olympia and the Olympic Games. The other was Heraea, the most important city of western Arcadia, a place that needed powerful friends. That bronze tablet, pulled from Olympia and transported to London, is now one of the best-preserved artifacts of early Greek interstate diplomacy. And the city that made it has largely vanished into the hillside above the Alpheios river.
