      <description><![CDATA[The bell never rang again. Sometime around the 1944 earthquake, the tower that once crowned the Hagia Triada toppled, and the bell that called Ayvalık's Greek Orthodox congregation to worship simply disappeared. No fragment of it survives. By then, the people who would have answered that bell were already gone, scattered across the Aegean two decades earlier. The church they built in 1846 still stands on the Turkish coast, a basilica of stone and timber holding the silence where a whole world used to be.]]></description>

Sometime around the 1944 earthquake, the tower that once crowned the Hagia Triada toppled, and the bell that called Ayvalık's Greek Orthodox congregation to worship simply disappeared.
