This was the Erythraean Sibyl, and the city that produced her sits today beneath a sleepy Turkish village called Ildırı, where five Hellenistic watchtowers still rise from a hillside that looks straight across the water to the Greek island of Chios. Erythrae was one of the twelve cities of the Ionian League, never large, never quite famous, but old enough to have founded itself in myth and stubborn enough to have outlasted empires.
