That, at least, is the story as the ancients preserved it: an Epidaurian ship on its way to the island of Cos was carrying a sacred serpent associated with the healing god Asclepius when, as the vessel touched the Laconian shore, the snake slipped over the side and vanished into the earth. The colonists from Epidaurus in Argolis took this as a sign — a divine instruction to stop here, to build — and so Epidaurus Limera came to be. The name they gave it, Limera, referred to the excellence of its harbours.
