Here, on the river the Greeks called the Tanais and drew as the very border between Europe and Asia, two peoples of expert horsemen met in 373 AD. On one side stood the Alans, masters of the steppe. On the other rode the Huns, newly arrived from the east and unknown to the settled world. Their valor, a later account allowed, was equal - but their fortune was not. When the fighting ended, the Alan king lay dead, and a chain of consequences had begun that would not stop until it reached the walls of Rome.
