Battle of the Kalka River: Introduction

Photo credit Public domain. The horsemen who appeared on the eastern steppe in 1223 were not, technically, an invasion. They were a reconnaissance - two generals given leave to see what lay beyond the Caucasus before turning home. Yet by the end of that spring the flower of the Rus nobility lay dead on the banks of an obscure river called the Kalka, in what is now Donetsk Oblast, and a chronicler could only write that a people had come "whom no one exactly knows, who they are." The Battle of the Kalka River was the first meeting between the Rus and the Mongols. It would not be the last, but it set the tone for everything that followed.
