Thirty men decided the whole thing. On the last day of September 1918, near the village of Dibrivka in southern Ukraine, a small band of anarchist insurgents found itself boxed inside a forest. Austrian troops held the river to the south-east, a German gun crew commanded the high ground, an infantry brigade blocked the north, and two hundred cavalry of the Ukrainian State Guard sealed the west. Reinforcements were already on the road. From that trap, Nestor Makhno proposed something that sounds closer to madness than strategy: not to slip out quietly, but to attack the very heart of the encirclement in broad daylight. The thirty men he chose walked toward the town square while the enemy rested.
