That dispatch is one of the most vivid documents of the ancient world — a flash of despair from men who had just watched their entire strategic position collapse in a single afternoon. The battle that produced it was not a grinding slog. It was a masterpiece of naval deception, executed in the grey waters of what is now the Sea of Marmara, and it came within a few years of ending the Peloponnesian War altogether.]]></description>
