Mustafa Kemal had been sent to Samsun on the Black Sea coast to disband the remnants of the Ottoman army following Turkey's defeat in the First World War. He went to Samsun, but he did not disband anything. Instead, over the months that followed, he organized resistance, rallied officers and civilians, and ignited the Turkish War of Independence — a conflict that would end with the founding of the Turkish Republic in 1923 and earn him the name Atatürk: Father of the Turks. The ship that carried him there bore the name of the port city it came from.
