Arabat Spit: Introduction

Photo credit Frantishak, CC BY-SA 3.0. Trace a finger down a map of the northern Sea of Azov and you will find a line so improbably narrow it looks like a cartographer's error. This is the Arabat Spit, a barrier of sand and crushed shell that runs 112 kilometers from north to south while measuring, in places, barely 270 meters across. On one side lies the open Azov, warm and swimmable. On the other broods the Syvash, a maze of shallow, hyper-saline lagoons that locals have long called the Rotten Sea. The spit is the wall between them, and a young one at that: geologists reckon the sea only piled it up around a thousand years ago, between roughly 1100 and 1200 AD. To stand on it is to occupy one of the strangest addresses on the map, a sliver of land with a sea on your left hand and a mirror of salt on your right, and scarcely enough ground between them to turn a wagon around.
