For a building called a palace, it is remarkably humble: a single-story stone house of restrained classicism, standing on what was once Grecheskaya Street in Taganrog. No grand staircase, no soaring wings - just clean lines and a plaque by the door. Yet in these plain rooms, in the late autumn of 1825, the ruler of the largest empire on Earth died far from his capital. And almost immediately, people began to wonder whether he had died at all. The house of Emperor Alexander I is small, but the mystery that seeped from it filled the whole of Russia.
