It was just after 5 a.m. on October 23, 2016, when the tour bus hit the rear of a semi-trailer parked on Interstate 10 near Palm Springs. The impact drove the trailer approximately 15 feet into the bus. Thirteen people died: the bus driver, Teodulo Elias Vides, who also owned the bus company, and twelve passengers. Thirty others were injured. The truck driver, Bruce Guilford, was physically unharmed. What followed was an investigation that would establish, in detail, how the accident had happened and why it was not, in any meaningful sense, an accident at all.
