1992 Joshua Tree earthquake: Introduction

Photo credit Mikenorton, CC BY-SA 3.0. The desert at nearly 10 p.m. is a quiet place. Whatever the residents of Joshua Tree were doing on the night of April 22, 1992, the earthquake that arrived at 9:50:25 p.m. interrupted all of it. The magnitude 6.2 rupture occurred beneath the Little San Bernardino Mountains on a previously unmapped fault — one that geologists, working from the pattern of aftershocks, would spend the following weeks trying to characterize. Thirty-two people were injured. Bridges sustained minor damage. Schools showed architectural harm. A supermarket took a hit. What made the earthquake significant was not so much what it did in the moment as what it seemed to portend: the epicenter sat dangerously close to the Coachella Valley segment of the San Andreas Fault, one of the most seismically charged sections of one of the most dangerous faults in North America.
