1976 Anapa Mid-Air Collision: Introduction

Different cities, different destinations, different passengers with different reasons to be aloft on a warm September afternoon. What they shared was a single number - 5,700 meters - and a single tired man on the ground who, in the span of a few crowded minutes, forgot to change it. At 13:51 Moscow time on 9 September 1976, the two aircraft found the same patch of sky above the coast at Anapa, and the Black Sea took what fell.
