1936 Bundaberg distillery fire: Introduction

At about a quarter past six on the evening of 21 November 1936, in a gathering storm over Bundaberg, lightning struck the rum distillery on the bank of the Burnett River. Inside the bond store stood 63 vats, each holding on average 10,000 gallons of rum and spirit, more than half a million gallons of alcohol in all. The strike set it alight, and within minutes the place was an inferno. Burning rum did not stay put. It flowed, a river of fire running out of the building and down into the Burnett itself, until the surface of the water was ablaze. The glow could be seen from Childers and Gin Gin, towns far enough away that their residents stepped outside to watch a distant sky turn orange.
